The objective of this research was to investigate the frictional performance of seal coat pavement overlays. The methodology followed involved establishing seal coat test sections in different climatic regions of the State of Texas. The test sections were constructed with different types of aggregate materials, using various construction application rates of asphalt and aggregates, under a wide range of traffic volumes. The laboratory properties of aggregates and the construction and traffic data were used in the formulation of statistical models describing seal coat field frictional performance.
The models provide highway engineers with an improved procedure for selecting aggregates for a given class of use, in a given environment of service, and for a given level of performance. They also provide them with a better understanding of the required construction practices needed for maintaining a desirable level of performance.
Finally, the models can be used to help achieve more effective planning for seal coat rehabilitation projects through the ability of predicting, at the design phase, the life of seal coat pavement overlays.
